Sunday, August 8 1999My computer went down last night and I finally got it working as of 8:00 this evening. I decided that since I had to restore windows I would just clean the hard drive and get some space back. I have 1.2 gigabytes, which was a lot of memory four years ago when I got this computer, and I was down to 50 megabytes on a good day which meant I spent a lot of time cleaning out files. Luckily I keep most things saved on zip disks, which are a lifesaver and has kept me from getting a new computer. I have about 10 zip disks (100 meg each) in use and I love them. I got windows restored enough to transfer a few other things and then went at it. It was a little scary since I haven't used the system disks since I got the computer and had a major problem setting up my computer. Packard Bell had to send me a new restore disk to finally get it up. This time the restore and reinstall disk didn't wipe out the hard disk even though I said to format the c drive, so I kept getting an error since I kept running out of room. Finally I went into dos and formated the c drive myself . From there the installation went well. By this time it was well into today. I did stop to sleep. Well everything came up but the dial up networking wouldn't work. The icon was there but when I clicked on it it just wouldn't do anything. Major disaster since getting online is what I use my computer for most. I even called my internet provider but they said it was a windows problem. Finally I rode my bike to work and picked up an old windows 95 cd from one of our old computers and used that to install windows 95. Finally everything worked about noon today. It's now 8:00 in the evening and I have spent the rest of the day installing the programs that I use. I decided since I was starting new I would download the latest of each. Most of them weren't a problem but MSIE took like three hours. Netscape only too two hours. Then I had to reinstall the software for my graphics program, my scanner, my printer, my zip drive, my html program, telnet and ftp. Four years ago I didn't even know what any of these things were since I didn't even use windows 95 at work, though we got it soon after. I do remember that I thought windows 95 was the neatest thing since sliced breat. Bill G may be a asshole about some things but I love his W95. Well yesterday was the first day I missed on my journal since I started so I was a bit upset about that since I'm trying to write each day, but it seemed silly to write it after the fact. When I travel I get them up late but I do write them as I go. Since I spent most of today waiting for things to download, I used the time to redo the format of my journal pages. I like playing with colors. You change a six little digits and it's a whole new color.
