Sunday, August 22, 1999In the cool of the morning I rode to the used bookstore and to the supermarket and then it was getting hot. I planned on taking the bus up to the shopping center to pick up some photos, but after my long ride in the heat yesterday I couldn't get up the interest in leaving the apartment and going into the heat. I tried reading a couple mysteries and couldn't get into them so I read P J O'Rourke's "Age and Guile Beat Youth, Innocence and a Bad Haircut". There really was a lot of garbage in the 60s though I must admit I missed most of the binge drinking and massive drug use. I got drunk and had marijuana once but that's about it. Now I consider two beers to be a real party. I like O'Rourke because he does see the lie in the idea that the government can do everything for us. He makes me laugh at not only old hippies and democrats, but republicans and war. Sometimes the only way we can deal with something is to laugh at it. They are having a two day orgy of Great Books on TLC and I keep watching it even though it makes me feel guilty that I've never read most of these books. I own several and do plan to read them, but never have. I tend to draw back from many classics because I've read some "great books" that I, quite frankly, found to be quite boring. I still regret that I didn't read more classics as so many of the books I have read, I don't even remember. I figure that a real classic would be remembered, at least in part, if not in detail. I think that some of the classics are considered classics just because not much was being written when they were written and even less survived. Especially the very early Greek and Roman writings which are bits and pieces of larger works, but still they did survive and are a glimpse of centuries and millenia before us. Cat is fat and sassy. I gave her some canned food earlier, which she only gets about once a week, so she thinks she's cool. It is amazing how she always seems to know and is under my feet from the minute I get the can out of the cupboard. It's not like she can read and the can is the same as a can of tuna and she's there before I open so she can't be smelling it. Now she's just lying in front of the window with her eyes half closed and looks so content.
