Thursday, September 9, 1999I was listening to country music today and wondered why I liked it so much. I don't care for a lot of the lyrics. It tends to have too many women putting up with jerks and too many men putting up with bitches. It has too many people being longsuffering and accepting of what life give them when the people I admire tend to be people who scream at what life gives them and refuse to accept crap. Still, when I listen to Patsy Cline sing "Walkin after Midnight" I just love it. Well, I just love Patsy Cline, period. I like the Sons of the Pioneers and Reba and the Statler Brothers. Ok, that includes western music also, though there's not much difference. I also like bluegrass. I think there is a primal scream that that country music touches in us. I know that there are so many songs that make me think "that's how I felt". Rock is ok but it's harder to understand the lyrics and it makes me think more of a spoiled brat whining. Rock is rebellion while country is knowing that life is a real bother and full of pain and then getting on with what needs to be done. Golden oldies, Sinatra and such, which I like, are more a bubble floating above real life. They're fun but don't really express what life is really like. When I really want to yell at life I listen to country music and it comforts me and then I go on with what I need to get done. And I enjoy listening to country music when I'm in a real good mood because I love the beat and rhythm better than that of rock music. It makes me want to dance. I like quite a few different kinds of music but country music is what comforts me and, while not cheering me up, makes me feel like it'll be ok.
