Saturday, September 11, 1999I'm so tired and my back hurts. I have spent all day cleaning house and packing to go to the Grand Canyon. I cleaned house because it is nasty to come back to a dirty house with smelly dishes and smelly garbage. I packed and repacked and repacked again because I am used to taking everything but the kitchen sink when I camp. Since I am walking into the campground from the bus I have to only take what I can carry with me. On the food section I kept reminding myself that there is a grocery store and several restaurants so I won't starve. I have always taken three times what I need to eat. I tell myself that it's nice to have a choice but, of course, I always eat what's easiest and I always know that I will. I am basing my food on dry cereal and tuna kits. I would love to be able to make my own but where can you get mayo and relish packets in less than case lots? I've looked for them. For some reason I never get mayo or relish when I eat out, it's always ketchup, taco sauce, and soy sauce. I will not have a cooler so I can't take a jar of mayonaise. I have an overnight backpack but it's very small and I just couldn't get everything in. As it was I had the tent, backpack and pad strapped on the outside and it was very unwieldy. I finally, after getting rid of a lot of clothes, I got all my clothes, food and stove into my rolling suitcase. I put my tent, sleeping bag and pad in a duffel, which I can put on top while walking. I can use my suitcase since I know that I'll be on paved roads into the campground. If I were going somewhere else I wouldn't want to take the chance. I think the rolling suitcases are great but they don't do well on dirt. I'll just roll up to my campsite and and set up camp. Frankly I find this a much better idea than a huge backpack so I hope it works well. I made my reservations this morning and the campgrounds are only half full, which will be nice. I used the online reservation system which works great and you get a confirmation notice to print out as well as an email message to confirm the reservation. At this point I realized that I have not been able to get my printer to work since I redid my computer. My computer refuses to even find the printer. I was running the my options, since I do need to take the confirmation with me, when I realized that they have computers and printers at the library next door. You have to reserve the four computers for an hour at a time, but the 15 min computer is first come, first serve. I went only and had to wait half an hour which gave me time to read a magazine. You pay 20 cents a page but it's worth it. It would take quite a few pages to cost what a new printer and/or computer would cost. I don't do much printing at home so it's not a major problem with me and now I have a solution. I think I'm ready and I'm about to fall asleep from tiredness. It will be nice to get lots of sleep. I always go to sleep earlier when camping so I get lots of rest. I am a little scared as this is the first time I've camped without a car as a backup, but I am excited and looking forward to it.
