Sunday, September 26, 1999I saw such a good movie today. It was "The General's Daughter". John Travolta was very good. The other actors were good but he was very good. It looked at how the military operates and how ambition operates and how a total system built on control operates. It was good and it was scary. I've always been very ambivalent about the military. I do feel that it is necessary to have a military since there are a lot of people out there, running other countries, that are not very nice and while I would like for us to all get along together, it's not going to happen. We do need a military and we need one that has up to date weapons and up to date soldiers. They also look real cute in those uniforms. On the down side, the military, like all organizations that depend on each other for life and death, tend to get a bit ingrown and cover up when colleagues commit crimes. As with the police and other law enforcement agencies, they don't like outsiders telling them what to do, but there has to be an outside oversight because they don't do a good job of policing themselves. This goes back to one of my pet peeves, that you don't tattle on each other. Of course, you do. Just because someone is your friend or your coworker or whatever, you don't cover up a crime and you don't cover up if they are hateful to other people. This movie also brought out the corrosion that unbridaled ambition coupled with an us against them mentality can bring, not only against the outsider but even against one of your friends, or colleagues, or family. It also was scary how easy it is to lie to ourselves about our motives and about what is best for those we love.
