Saturday, October 2, 1999I did a lot of reading today and finished a few books. I didn't read these all today, just finished them. I tend to have several books going at once. Some I finish in a day, some take months, some I never finish. "The Last Apocalypse" by James Reston, Jr. was about what was happening at the last millenium. I hadn't realized that this was the time when all of Europe was turning from paganism to Christianity. It occured over a period of about 45 years but was pretty much accomplished by 1000 AD. He also brought out that the first millenium wasn't a big deal in itself. Most people then didn't pay as much attention to times and dates as we do now. I enjoyed reading it even though Reston made it clear in the introduction that many of his sources were sagas and songs told by the people as there wasn't much in the way of literacy and so much of our knowledge of that time is based on conjecture and the ability to read between the lines. What a bloody time though! They were vicious, cruel, genocidal and unbelievably sadistic and it's hard now to imagine people behaving like that. We have our own atrocities but they pale in comparison. I just find it unbelievable that some people think it would be nice to live back then. The second book was "Beyond ADD" by Thom Hartman. He brings out his theory that people with ADD/ADHD are hunters in a farmer's world. He says that we are more genetically atuned to the quick action and constantly changing attention that hunters needed. We are only about 5% to 10% of the population now, after thousands of years of the farmer genes being selected for. I thought it was an interesting and appealing idea and it makes a lot of sense. The third book was "Big Trouble" by Dave Barry. This is his first fiction book and it reads much like his non-fiction. The plot basically involves people who have nothing in common but all end up involved with each other in ridiculous and totally unbelievable situations. I laughed hysterically all the way through. I also did a lot of sorting and filing today. I love picking up brochures and such everywhere I go but if I don't do something about them I'm soon overflowing with paper. The worst are the transit schedule books. They just don't fit neatly in a file. Now I have everything filed and neatly put away, for now, till I bring more junk home. What I really need to do is get rid of most of what I have. It's nice to have things neatened up but my back is a little sore.
