Wednesday, October 13, 1999I finished "Shadow Syndromes" by John J. Ratey MD and Catherine Johnson PhD. It goes into how most of us have little differences in our brain. None of us are alike physically, why would we be alike mentally? The shadow syndromes are pale reflections of serious mental disorders from attention deficit disorder to obsessive compulsive disorder. The authors use the chaos theory to show how there is a ripple effect in the brain, that is not that well understood, from environmental factors, from hormones let off by emotions to food to medicine. More of a web than a ripple, actually. This is why medicines to treat one syndrome often help with an opposite problem. It's a very interesting book even though, or even because, the authors admit that we have barely scrapped the surface of what happens in our brains. They are not computers but living, organic minds that can compute, think and feel faster than any computer ever could. Being living and organic they are also imperfect and they are all different which is what makes human beings so interesting. This is an excellent book. I feel tired tonight. I've been yawning all day. I guess four hours in a car and then sitting all day yesterday tired me out. I'm trying to get everything caught up at work as LW is going on vacation next week for two weeks so I'm going to be very busy. I think I'll be a vine for halloween. I can wear green tights and tshirt and have tendrils everywhere. I wonder what I can make the tendrils out of, though?
