Sunday, October 24, 1999It's nice to have the cool mornings, even if the afternoons (and even late mornings) are still in the 90s. I walked over to the McDonalds on 1st and Ft Lowell by way of the dirt roads south of Prince. This is a strange area. Right in the middle of the mile block the roads are all dirt. The houses are set back in desert landscaping. Well, not actually landscaping, it's the real thing that has been left alone. The sun was in my eyes and I had to keep my hat pulled down to see. The creosote was glistening with the early morning sun. It was like being in the country as there was no traffic. I broke out of the area onto Campbell and the McDonalds. It was still early enough to have just a few people, including a guy with a bike covered with cans. He was explaining how the country should be run to another guy who looked vaguely interested. I decided to sit somewhere else. The couple near me were only reading the sports page and not talking. There's nothing like a McDs breakfast early on a Sunday morning. I read a couple chapters of my book while eating. You always have to have a book with you. After breakfast I walked down Campbell then over to the post office on Speedway to mail some letters. Sunday mornings are good walking time as there isn't much traffic and you can hear the birds and enjoy the walk without the roar of traffic. I dropped a block south of Speedway to Himmel Park where I did some stretching, better late than never. The tennis players were out in force. You learn to play tennis early in Tucson. I've come by Himmel before seven in the morning and there were already several people playing. While walking south to 6th Street I decided to do a little alley walking. Alleys are like truly seeing people's soul, or at least what they don't want seen by the world. The biggest problem I've had while wandering down alleys is all the dogs barking at me behind fences that don't look too strong. It's not that I don't like dogs, but after years of walking, though I've never been bitten, I still get nervous when a dog is barking furiously and throwing himself at the fence trying to get at me. The first couple blocks of the alley were your basic generic alley that had the big green trash bins to be picked up. They were fairly easy to walk in. Then I got into a long stretch that was overgrown and hard to get through. The houses weren't even and in a couple places the garbage truck wouldn't have been able to get through and it became overgrown. I had on Tevas and socks and got stickys all over and a couple of them got under my foot and really hurt when I stepped on them. It was interesting as it varied from high grasses to clear areas under trees that looked hidden and inviting. It was two to three blocks long with only a couple places to exit so it could be a bit unnerving if it hadn't been such a great morning. I came out north of El Con and walked over to it and through the empty mall. The doors had just been unlocked and there were only a couple other people walking through there. My feet were tired by this time and I decided to take the bus home. The first bus didn't come and I waited 45 minutes before I got on the bus. It was already getting very warm by the time I got home but it was great to take a long walk now that the mornings are cooling off a little. Later I had a long talk with my daughter so it was a good day.
