Tuesday, November 9, 1999I took the Metro Rail today, the Green line and then transfered to the Blue line. I was surprised that it was all above ground except a small part downtown. For some reason I thought subways were underground. It was nice being able to see where we're going. The ride goes through quite a variety of neighborhoods including LAX. The closer we got to downtown the poorer they got, and then we hit downtown which was all bright and glittery and everyone had expensive suits, except for the people keeping it clean. I still liked downtown. There's an energy in a busy downtown and Los Angeles is very busy. There is a nice mix of glass and mirrors buildings and old 50s buildings. I stopped at the library to use the bathroom and enjoyed looking around at the old moldings and carvings. They also have a cafe in the library. How cool! Check out a book and read it while enjoying a nic cup of coffee. I went through the Museum of Contemporary Art. It was nice but I didn't care for it as much as I thought I would. They didn't have that much, but, mainly, it wasn't the type of art I cared for. It was contemporary, just not what I liked. I also went by the Wells Fargo Museum, which I liked better. I realized that I like art that is used and a stagecoach is a work of art, much more than a lot of contemporary art. We won't know for years, maybe not in our lifetime, so I guess they have to keep trying new art. I also rode the Dash bus around and up to Union Station. It's nice to have a cheap (25 cents) way to run around town. It would be nice if it were free, but it's not bad. I stopped at the Old Pueblo area across from the Union Station and would like to go back and look at some of the houses tomorrow. I walked through Union Station to catch the Red Line and loved, again, the wonderful details of the building. It is such a great place. I hope it works out to use it as a transit center. It's a little out of the way for downtown, but for everywhere else it's great and a treasure that needs to be saved. This time I got off at the Nash/Sepulveda station and took the Torrance #8 bus back. It was a little scary as I had no idea where the bus came and it was starting to get dark, but soon it came around the corner and I headed back. I'm having a good time!
