One of my birthday presents was a Doonesbury book and a cd with 25 years of Doonesbury. It's so cool. Oh wow! I got married the year Doonesbury started and followed it so closely for years along with Mother Earth News and The Whole Earth Catalogue. I can still remember how exciting it was to hear about so many new ideas.

I've always liked Doonesbury because he made fun of both sides of any issue and showed the pomposity of all politicians and activists. This is how I became aware of politics. Kids nowadays seem much more interested in politics but when I was in highschool I barely knew who was president. It didn't really register till Kennedy was killed during my senior year.

In large part because of Doonesbury, I ended up as a libertarian though I've pulled back from that to being basically conservative on economic issues, most economic issues, but liberal on social issues and wavering back and forth on the environment. I think it's because Doonesbury made me see that both sides are stretching the truth to the breaking point and our only salvation is to think for ourselves.

It is so addictive to go through the old cartoons from the 70s and see how well they've held up. So much has changed since then, but people really haven't. We're still trying to figure out what's going on with ourselves and other people. In the 70s I got married, had two children, and got divorced and then I had to support my children and so much for love being enough to live on.
